I am an academic and an entrepreneur.
I teach courses in business, law, risk management, and marketing at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, Canada. My principal research interests are in sports and adventure law.
My consulting expertise is in the areas of outdoor education and wilderness risk management, and sport marketing.
I am also a frequent contributor to The Sports Law Canary blog at http://sportslawnews.wordpress.com/
My experience bridges the real world of risk management, sports law, business and adventure tourism with the rigour of academia.
I have worked as a climbing guide and have led expeditions around the world, written reviews for the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, worked in management at Petzl, and been an expert witness for the US National Park Service.
I now teach at a university, present at conferences and publish articles internationally, and consult with all levels of government and the private sector on risk reduction strategies and tourism development.
I am also an advisor to the 2010 World Masters Athletics Championships Board of Directors and am a member of the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts' BC Recreation Trails Strategy Advisory Committee which has built the framework to a sustainable and world-class trail program. In addition, I am doing research comparing the legal standard of care and consent in contact sports between England and Canada.
