ROLE: Sport psychologist .

WHAT DOES THE ROLE INVOLVE: Providing sport psychology support to individuals or teams with the primary aim of enhancing performance. I work with a wide range of athletes from a wide range of sports. I can work with athletes directly or I can work with coaches and support staff.

COMMON PERFORMANCE ISSUES THAT A SPORT PSYCHOLOGIST CAN HELP WITH:
Pre-competition nerves/anxiety
Improving self-confidence
Coping with sports injuries
Time and lifestyle maanagement
Improving focus/concentration
Developing mental skills

ONE-TO-ONE CONSULTATIONS:

An initial one-to-one sport psychology session will involve an assessment of your needs and requirements. From this, an individualised sport psychology programme will be developed. Most athletes choose to have regular one-to-one consultations to discuss any performance issues and to further develop their psychological skills.

GROUP SESSIONS:

Sport psychology sessions can also be delivered to small or large groups on any sport psychology related topic(s). These group sessions are normally delivered to sports teams and/or support staff.

Group sessions could be used to introduce athletes to sport psychology and lead into one-to-one sessions. Alternatively, they could be delivered as a programme of group sessions covering various topics, or simply as a 'one-off' session.

REMOTE CONSULTATIONS:

Consultations can be conducted by telephone, email, instant messaging (e.g. msn messenger) or other internet sources (e.g. Skype) through the completion of a detailed assessment questionnaire and the subsequent development of a sport psychology programme. Due to the reduced interpersonal contact of this method, it is recommended that it is only used by individuals who have had an initial one-to-one consultation, or those who would otherwise not have access to sport psychology support (e.g. due to financial or geographical constraints).

I have been providing sport psychology support to athletes since 1999 and in that time have worked with a large number of performers from a wide range of sports.
