I am a London based Sport Psychologist that also works in Sussex, Essex and Kent.  I am a BPS Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist and a BASES accredited sport and exercise scientist (psychology - scientific support).  I work as an applied consultant and run a company called Total Performance Consulting.  At Total Performance Consulting I work in the applied field with elite athletes and sports people as well as training other sport psychologists and taking potential sport psychologists through the BASES supervised experience process.

I am also a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of East London (UEL).  I have been at UEL since 2002 and am proud to be involved with a modern University that takes sport science and sport psychology very seriously.  For information about UEL sport science courses please visit http://www.uel.ac.uk/hab/sports/index.htm

I am part of the BASES Psychology special interest group where I sit on the committee and have a specific role of workshop representative. 

I have previously worked in the fitness industry as a personal trainer but have been involved in Sport Psychology in a full time capacity for the past 8 years.

Training to those wishing to become sport and exercise psychology consultants.  I lead a programme that takes potential sport and exercise psychology consultants through the BASES supervised experience process.  The group meets 8 - 9 times a year in London to cover the BASES competencies and to discuss their personal development as a consultant.

Sport psychology support to groups and individuals of all levels of expertise.  I will come to your venue to assist you with your psychological approach to your sport.

Exercise psychology support: Do you run a gym and cannot retain either your staff or your members.  Let me help you with this by training your staff in a way that will leave them more motivated and enable them to interact with your members in a manner that will encourage them to continue to use and enjoy your facilities.

Exercise psychology support to individuals: Do you join a gym with the best of intentions but then can not seem to continue? If so let me help you through one to one sessions to learn ways unique to you that keep your interest and enable you to obtain the gains that made you join in the first instance.

I generally work in the South East of England.  I have worked regularly in Norwich before and am happy to travel if it is necessary.  However, I generally provide sport psychology support and training to people in London, and the home counties.

Biography : James Beale James entered into the area of Sport Psychology from a mainstream psychology background. Prior to his career in Sport Psychology James' career followed two paths; several years were spent working in the fitness industry as a personal trainer. James remains a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) where he holds Advanced Instructor (Level 3) status. In addition, James spent a year working as a researcher at St Georges Hospital Medical School in the Department of Forensic Psychiatry where he was involved with Applied Psychology in its traditional form.  James found this process invaluable and feels it gives him an advantage over many other sport psychologists as it provides him with a depth of understanding for using a variety of techniques across a broad range of sports people Qualifications:   British Psychological Society (BPS) Chartered Psychologist    British Association of Sports & Exercise Sciences (BASES) Accreditation as an Applied Sport Psychologist A Master of Science Degree (MSc) in Sport & Exercise Psychology from University College Chichester A Batchelor of Science Honours Degree (BSc Hons) in Psychology from Middlesex University Certificate in Humanistic Counselling Sport and Exercise Psychology Experience:   James has worked in a variety of sports, across a range of sporting levels.  He specialises in the field of elite sports teams and sports professionals.  James has worked in Premiership Football, First Class County Cricket, International Korfball, International Table Tennis, Professional Tennis, International Triathlon as well as a broad range of other sports James lectures in Sports Psychology at the University of East London. He lead the development of the undergraduate programme in Sport and Exercise Psychology, the first of its kind in London and was subsequently made programme leader and Senior Lecturer.  James also trains professional sport psychologists and runs a unique training programme that takes potential students through the BASES supervised experience process.  For more details on this process see our training page. James is on the steering committee of both the BASES Psychology Special Interest Group and the BASES High Performance Psychology Interest Group where he takes an active role in developing sports psychology as a profession and discipline  Personal:   James was twice British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) table tennis gold medallist with the Middlesex University table tennis team. He continues to play table tennis and regularly runs and competes in different events.  In June 2006 James completed the Bananaman Chase 10k in a time of 38 minutes on behalf of Leukaemia Research.  James also enjoys playing tennis and football.

At Total Performance Consulting we have a policy not to use testimonials. Since 2006 we have worked with and alongside Olympic gold medalists, Premier League Football Clubs, ATP tennis events, First Class County Cricket Clubs, International Athletes, International Teams and the emergency services to name but a few. We have always been effective and had excellent feedback. It would be very easy for us to gain testimonials from high profile sports people. However, we have decided not to use a testimonial from any of them. 

Should you choose to use Total Performance Consulting we will not ask you to write something nice about us, we will honor our ethical code through BASES and the BPS and the confidentially issue within. At no point will any pressure be placed on you to provide us with a testimonial. 


A number of sport psychology consultants use testimonials and we are not judging them. However our policy is not to place any of our clients in a position that goes outside of the original agreement no matter how willing they may be to go along with this and provide us with a testimonial.

However a brief summary of some of the more important qualifications are below:

I am a chartered psychologist under the British Psychological Society (BPS), an accredited sport & exercise psychologist under the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES) and I have a masters degree in sport psychology.

I live in St Leonards On-Sea which is just outside of Hastings in East Sussex on the South East Coast.  I enjoy staying fit and playing for a local football team on a Saturday whenever possible (i.e. when they are short!).  I work in London and believe that I have the best of both worlds, the hustle and bustle of London during the working week and the natural beauty of coast in my spare time.  Add to this I get to see lots of my family, which is very important to me.  I must admit that the daily commute can be a real pain! However it works for me at the moment.

I am passionate about sport and sport psychology and follow the sports news obsessively.  I love to follow the fortunes of the teams that I am involved with or have been involved with in the past.  I have a general over enthusiasm for sport.
