Profile Summary
I work with athletes and people involved in sport using counselling to assist them when psychological issues such as depression arise
Throughout both my time in training and my post-chartership clinical work, I have focussed on specific client groups and, in the last few years, this is reflected in my work with psychologists directly involved in sport issues. I have, for example, been actively involved in the training of sports psychologists, where I have offered short course interventions in the counselling skills needed to work with people from a sports background and I have also worked fairly exstensively in supervising sports psychologists in their clinical work.
My core philosophy is very integrative, which really means that any issues that come my way are approached from a very solid, multi- theoretical perspective. The BPS are very clear that an effective practitioner in a specialist area should demonstrate a solid and testable background in theory-practice links, which should be both reliable and valid, in terms of the outcomes we see for our clients. I hold strongly with this philosophy.
In addition, I am fully qualified in motivational interviewing techniques; in a clinical technique that looks at reduction in any expressed experience of trauma (EMDR) and in the principles of solution-focussed interventions.
I have published papers in the areas of cognition and emotion, mental and sexual health of young people and training issues for clinicians (please see CV for a summary)
In my general adult mental health work, I have specialiesd in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy interventions for a range of issues, including depression, anxiety and under-performance related problems with individuals and groups as well as longer-term psychodynamic and person-centered work on an individual basis.
In my forensic work, I have provided risk assessments, therapeutic interventions and follow-up work for a range of clients in category A and B prisons in the greater London area. This work is both challenging and extremely rewarding (sometimes!) and covers a wide range of clinical presentations, from repeat offenders, severe and enduring personality disorders and general adult mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders.
At Total Performance Consulting we have a policy not to use testimonials. Since 2006 we have worked with and alongside Olympic gold medalists, Premier League Football Clubs, ATP tennis events, First Class County Cricket Clubs, International Athletes, International Teams and the emergency services to name but a few. We have always been effective and had excellent feedback. It would be very easy for us to gain testimonials from high profile sports people. However, we have decided not to use a testimonial from any of them.
My undergraduate and post-graduate training, which cover a total period of eight years, were undertaken at the University of East London, where I currently work as a Senior Lecturer in Applied Psychology.
My clinical work has involved a wide range of client groups, including sports professionals, adult mental health, children and adolescents and forensic populations. I have worked, and continue to work, in hospitals, prisons and in private practice and my research and teaching interests reflect my clinical interests, which I persue at the University of East London and elsewhere.
I was recently elected to the position of Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and to the position of Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
I work with clients from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, often in their first language being, as I am, fluent in English, German and French. I divide my time between my commitments at the university in London, my clinicsal placements in London and my second home in the Rousillon region of southern France.
