Creating a Nation of Active Women

There is a crisis in women's sport and fitness in the UK. More than 80% of women and girls are not doing enough physical activity to benefit their health. Young women are now half as active as young men. The situation is forecast to get even worse over the next ten years.

Creating a Nation of Active Women is the essential event in the sporting calendar for anyone with an interest in getting more women involved in sport and exercise. Hosted by the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF), the conference will build on last year's ground-breaking event which drew widespread national attention to the crisis in women's physical activity. This year will set out the solutions.

Speakers confirmed:

- Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Paralympian Gold Medalist

- Sue Tibballs, CEO, Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation

- Margot Raggett, CEO, Lexis PR - Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty

- Kate Spicer, Freelance Journalist & Broadcaster, and Writer of Cycle Girl column, Sunday Times

- Donna de Varona, Olympic Gold Medalist, First President & Chairman, Women's Sports Foundation USA and Member of the IOC, Women in Sport Commission and Co-chair, Back Softball Campaign

- Karen Rothery, Chief Executive, British Universities & Colleges Sport

- Dame Kelly Holmes, Double Gold Olympic Medalist

- Gerry Sutcliffe, Minister for Sport

- Scott McCarthy, CEO, British Judo Association

- Jessica Lindohf, Women, Girls & Sport Officer, sportscotland

What will this event offer you?

- Invaluable lessons from the retail sector on how to treat women as customers, tailoring products and services to meet their needs

- How to create a culture in which active women are attractive women, with an analysis of the media's role in making young women feel being thin is more important than healthy

- An insight into Government's plans to prioritise women's sport, health and fitness

- Leading sports case studies from pioneers in women's sport and exercise

- Inspirational, first-hand accounts from successful sportswomen

- An overview of the new, Government-backed Commission on the Future of Women's Sport that will drive change in the sector

- A view from across the water: learning from the American model

- The foremost industry discussion forum and networking opportunity

This conference is for policy-makers, sport and exercise deliverers, business, sponsors and the media wanting to understand and realise the exceptional potential of a nation of active women. As London takes the 2012 torch, there's never been a better time.

Sport in Post-Disaster Intervention

My name is Vincent Chew, and I am with the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education in Berlin. I would like to invite you and your network to participate in ICSSPE's 2nd Sport in Post-Disaster Intervention seminar, which will occur from 1-7 November 2008 in Rheinsberg, Germany. For one week, professionals involved in various tasks in disaster relief efforts will mix with students, researchers, and others to learn from experts and each other to share their experiences in assisting communities to overcome trauma. This is an opportunity to participate in unique training sessions designed to teach skills that can have a substantial impact on an affected community.

This special seminar provides theoretical and practical training in a controlled gym setting, combined with a multi-disciplinary perspective on how to incorporate sport and physical activity into a disaster relief setting. Disciplines include psychology, adapted physical activity, pedagogy, and more.

Session topics include:

- Sport and Reconstruction - Examples of Good Practice (Ms. Jutta Engelhardt and Ms. Jaleh Saboktakin, Swiss Academy for Development)

- Occupational Therapy in Disaster Relief (Ms. Susanne Ettel and Ms. Susanne Waldow, Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation)

- Didactics (Teaching and Learning) in Crisis Areas (Mr. Ian Pickup, Roehampton University)

- Inclusive Activities and Games (Mr. Ken Black, Right To Play)

- Developing Activities Without Equipment (Mr. Christoph Schwager, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich)

- Psychology As Part of Emergency Relief (Dr. Alan Kirk, Kennesaw State University)

- Monitoring and Evaluation in the Disaster Setting (Ms. Marianne Meier, Swiss Academy for Development)

For those interested in presenting their work in the field, ICSSPE has made arrangements for a poster session which can be used to highlight projects, research, and other information relevant to the topic.

Participants in the seminar will come from all over the world, as disasters can strike both industrialized and developing areas. The seminar attracts both disaster relief professionals who want to incorporate sport and physical activity in their efforts, but also those with a sport background, who want to expand their projects into the rapidly growing sport and development area.

Space is very limited, so you are urged to register immediately. Please note that registration is not considered complete until registration fees have been received by ICSSPE.

For the latest on programme information, and to register, please visit our website at www.icsspe.org

This event is held under the leadership of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education and is financed with the assistance of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (Germany), in co-operation with Kennesaw State University (USA), the Fürst Donnersmarck-Foundation, the German Red Cross, and Freie Universität Berlin.
