The Lions - A special Rugby occasion
On Saturday the 30th May, the British and Irish Lions Kicked off their 2009 tour of South Africa. The British and Irish Lions are a special touring party made up from the four 'Home' nations - England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales; South Africa are a notoriously hard playing nation and the current World Champions.
The Lions have 6 matches to form a successful team before playing a three match test series against the World Champions in their own back garden. It's surely not a surprise that the successful Lions teams over the course of history are the ones that report the highest feelings of camaraderie on the tour. The last two tours have been criticised for their 'two squad' (one for mid-week games and one for Saturday games) approach, so no surprise that they were both unsuccessful.
In their favour is that this years Head coach also headed the last successful Lions tour, in South Africa, during their last reign as World Champions twelve years ago. Let's hope that the Team building and other psychological lessons learned in that tour will lead to a winning performance again this time around.
