Total Performance Consulting BASES Supervised Experience Group: Vacancy for 2 New Members

Views: 287 | Rating: 5.0 (1 vote) | Print | | Flag
In my capacity as applied sport psychologist and director of Total Performance Consulting I lead a training group that takes potential sport psychologists through the BASES supervised experience process (the process that leads onto BASES accreditation as a sport and exercise psychologist).

The group is normally formed of 8 people and there are currently 2 places available for this September.  The course is based in
London with the group meeting 8 – 9 times per year between September and June with the occasional social outing to facilitate team cohesion.

The course has been very successful with group members developing portfolios working with premier league football teams, national governing bodies as well as a range of other professional and amateur sports clubs.  The group meetings are in place to facilitate progress through the BASES supervised experience process and to ensure that you are able to be effective in supporting athletes and teams with their psychological approach to sport while working as a probationary sport psychologist.  The group meetings take place in a challenging supportive environment to enable members to develop their skills as a consultant.

I am looking for 2 more members to join the group and go through the process of growth with the current members.  You should normally have a post graduate degree in an area related to sport psychology (those starting a post graduate course this year would be considered).  You must be passionate about sport be willing to work away from the seminar days to build a portfolio of clients that will enable you to go on and become a BASES accredited practitioner.

Should you be interested in discussing the possibility of joining the group please call me on 07985414942.

As a member of the group I would recommend that anyone thinking about the SE process should join the group. Over the last two years I have found the help and advice offered by James and other members of the group to be invaluable. You may have seen the extensive forum discussion about the process of becoming a sports psychologist, as it says it is more than just studying a masters or PhD. As such I would suggest that you really do need a mentor to advise and guide you through both the application for accreditation and the practical issues which surround dealing with clients. The chairperson of BASES has recently written that the HPC has strongly suggested that it will be taking out the Sport and Exercise Psychology strand from its recent proposals and will be looking to incorporate this strand into a Sports Scientist pathway similar to the BASES set up. Therefore it would seem that there is now no reason for anyone to hold back from joining the accreditation process. The group itself is quite diverse with people at various stages of accreditation and having different experiences and philosophies about their approaches to the practical application of sport and exercise psychology. Session normally occur once a month and start with a warm up involving exercises to help us focus on the day ahead, each session covers a particular topic and part of the day either involves role play or a chance to share experiences and to reflect on our working practices. We also have our own forum site so we are able to discuss and share ideas at any time. As has already been stated as well as on the forum, in order to become an effective accredited sport and exercise psychologist you must initially fulfil the SE and accreditation criteria, but also obtain a range of other skills. I believe the most effective way to do this is to have a mentor/supervisor and a group of peers who are willing to share their experiences, so that each member of the group can grow into effective practitioners’. James and the members of TPC SE group assist me in that goal.

Hi David, Just to clarify something, it looks like Sport and Exercise Psychologists have now been re-included in the HPC proposals for psychologists, so it's no longer going to be included in the Sports Sciences pathway. The BPS website has the lastest documents outlining this at http://www.bps.org.uk/the-society/statutory-regulation/statutory-regulation---latest-updates/statutory-regulation---latest-updates_home.cfm - see the notes to/from the DH lawyer in particular.
