Barca inspired by Guardiola film

Apparently the the english press are overwhelmed by the fact that the Barcelona FC put together a film which included action images of each of his players to the music from the film "gladiator" and the opera "Turandot". the BBC web site stated that the young manager can add film director to his CV after producing the perfect images to inspire victory.

How do we working in sport psychology feel when the press in this country feel that this simple motivational tool used by a number of us is the put out as something brand new and unique. i got the impression that they seemed to think it has never been tried in this country.

If the journos haven't heard of it, it can't have happened.

In some ways though it is a good thing as if everyone knew about what we do then perhaps we would be in a position where people would just do it anyway. However I see your point that this lack of awareness may well be the reason that the market place is not developing at the rate that we would all like.

Our (sport psychologist) role is not really to make the video, though, for that does not differentiate us from anyone that can use a camera and software. A sport psychologist can assess the needs of the athlete/team and advise on the content. That's a point of difference.

I think the content of the video can be very much the role of the sport psychologist.

Hmm.... it gets back to the point of marketing what we do. It highlights the inherent lack of vision displayed so abjectly by BASES when the Psychology Interest Group put together a programme to tackle just the point you are making. It was dismissed by the Strategic Management Group then and one can only hope that things have moved on and they can see the value of promoting what sport psychologists can do eg. Roberto Forzoni, a sport psychologist put together a brilliant video for the West Ham (EPL soccer team) players a few years ago which fired them up completely. I've seen this video and it's very effective.
On a wider note, it's up to sport psychologists themselves to take on some responsibility to promote themselves via this medium - iStadia being an effective example whether it's through the coach or the player/team. Whilst ethics are critically important, it shouldn't stop them from talking about what they do (with relevant permissions ideally in writing) and the impact that they can have. Coaches do it, why not sport psychologists? IMHO it's man management (motivation/psychology) that differentiates great coaches/managers from the rest.

I am not one for reading into too much via the media. Whilst I like the BBC for up to date reports i tend not take much notice of press talk etc.

I can see all your points of view but at the end of the day I believe the relevance of this sports psychology is down to you as the psychologist, football manager or whatever. If you feel this is a beneift to your team, player or whoever then you should take responsibility to put it into action.

We all can't make films but I'm sure we all know someone who could help out.

Like Keith says it's down to the leader. I beleive the likes of Morinhio, Ferguson, Wenger, & Guardiola are open to improving their players in a multitude of areas and put these in place. Thats why few win the Champions league, few win the Premier league but lots fail to implement good psychological ideas and wonder why they struggle to compete.

Be open to everything and choose what works for you and your athletes. One things for certain. My players would not be sitting reading the Sun in their spare time, they would be watching a film like we are discussing.
