Button, Barrichello and The NFL Punter

Coming off the back of the now famous Brawn 1-2 at the Australian Grand Prix, it led me to thinking that in sport you never know what is just around the corner.

On the 5th of March 2009 Jenson Button and Rubens Barichello may have been forgiven for thinking that their F1 careers were over. With no buyer for their former Honda team they did not have a drive for the 2009 season ahead. However just 3 short weeks later they were finishing first and second at the Australian Grand Prix... unbelievable.

Similarly Ben Graham a punter for the Arizona Cardinals went on an incredible journey. After spending years with the NY Jets he was subsequently dropped on September 16 2008, just a handful of months  out from the 2009 Superbowl, at 35 years of age surely this meant his NFL football career was over? One week later on September 22 the Jets resigned Graham only to drop him again on September 29, surely this time it meant his career was finished?

Unexpectedly on October 20 2008 Ben Graham signed a new deal with New Orleans, he played that weekend before being dropped on October 28 2008... Ben Graham however did not give up on his NFL career and after being dropped 3 times in 2 months with only 3 months until the Superbowl he once again found some good luck.

On December 1st 2008 the lowly ranked outsiders the Arizona Cardinals signed Ben Graham to be their punter. Against all odds and quite amazingly the Arizona Cardinals actually made it to the Superbowl, ahead of any of the teams that had actually dropped Ben during the season! Unfortunately the Cardinals narrowly missed out on winning the Superbowl, going down to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-23.

Ben Graham is likely to play another season in the NFL after all hope had been lost!

As you can see all three of these sports stars had remarkable changes in fortune and ended up in remarkable positions. You just never know what is around the corner. Button, Barrichello and Graham all came back from sheer adversity and returned to the very peak of their sport.

The point is, stay focused, stay positive and stay committed because you never know what is around the corner, who you are going to meet, when you will get that break and what may happen. This applies to both sport and beyond.

Keep Racing!
